FRESH NEW TALENT EMERGES IN ATLANTA

This past weekend we had the opportunity to attend EMERGING: A New Choreographer's Workshop at the Ferst Center for the Arts at Georgia Tech. The show was nothing more than amazing! Young choreographers apply to be a part of the showcase every year. Once the choreographers are selected, they are paired with a mentor to help guide them through the process and prepare them for the stage. In addition to a mentorship, the choreographers are properly educated on stage production through a partnership with UGA from Technical Director Christopher Flemming.

The ten selected choreographers showcased their work this past weekend among an unsuspecting audience and once the final piece, lights and music faded away there was a sense of awe in the air. Each choreographer presented an intimate peak inside their creative mind. These pieces spanned from deep compelling life lessons to upbeat moving stories. It was absolutely wonderful!

Nonetheless, Emerging opens the door to new opportunities for upcoming choreographers in Atlanta. We commend Daryl Foster, the founder of Emerging for creating an amazing platform for serious choreographers. Choreographers of today who want to grow and expand their career.

Furthermore, in order to grow as a community, we need to be selfless, so we can help one another excel to the next level. That's exactly why we need more people like Daryl to step up and lead the future dancers and choreographers into the right direction. Thank you Daryl for being a great example in the dance community.

Bravo Brandon Forrest, Jordan Galloway, Mallory Hazen, Anthony Marquis, Keith Nedd, Jessica Oglesby, Chris Plunkett, Nateli Ruiz, and Mario Tyler on a job well done! We look forward to seeing what great things you have in store. Look out world!

EMERGING: A NEW CHOREOGRAPHERS WORKSHOP MAY 2-3, 2014

EMERGING: A New Choreographers Workshop returns for its fourth installment, of this incredible emerging choreographers showcase May 2nd and 3rd at 8pm at Georgia Tech’s Ferst Center for the Arts.
EMERGING evolved as a way to nurture new talent in the fine art of choreography. Young choreographers apply to be a part of the process that pairs each one to a mentor, and space to do their work. Mentors guide choreographers through the process, and prepare them for the stage. In addition to the artistic work each choreographer is educated on the behind the scenes aspect of production via a partnership with the dance department at The University of Georgia. Christopher Flemming, technical director at UGA Dance, will be teaching the young choreographers the skills of lighting, staging, and directing the team as they hang, focus lights, and build out the space that there work will be presented in.

EMERGING, is a multi-layered process that educates and guides the artist through each step of art making. Kim Thomas, owner of Gotta Dance Atlanta, has renewed her commitment to sponsoring EMERGING, and these young developing artist. GDA provides rehearsal space for the choreographers, as well as, access to the talented teaching staff that is available every step of the way. This years mentors are CiCi Kelley, Monica Noble, Daryl Foster, Kiki Ely, and Gary Beauford. We have some new choreographers coming to the stage this season, and some familiar ones that will be taking their work to the next level as well. Last seasons ChoreoLab proved successful, and has graduated Chris Plunkett, Brandon Forrest, and Mallory Hazen to the EMERING stage to have their work fully produced. Jessica Oglesby, an EMERGING vet, along with Nateli Ruiz, and Keith Nedd will be returning to the EMERGING stage with new works that feature exciting mixes of Hip Hop, and Contemporary dance. New to EMERGING this year will be Jordan Galloway, Anthony Marquise, and Kenny Strong. Each of these young people carries fresh artistic weight that guarantees to impress.

All events will be held at the Drama Tech Theater at Georgia Tech’s Ferst Center for the Arts. You can purchase your EMERGING wristband for $15.00 at the door, from a choreographer, or at Gotta Dance. Please visit www.Men.Dance.Life.com/EMERGING or www.Got2dance.net for additional information.
